How to Transcribe an Audio File in Nigeria, Step by Step

This is the whole process, start to finish, assuming you have a recording and no particular technical background.

1. Get the file somewhere you can reach it

Most recordings here start on a phone. Voice Recorder on Android, Voice Memos on iPhone, or a WhatsApp voice note somebody forwarded you.

The thing to avoid is re-recording. If you play a voice note on one phone and record it with another, you have added a room, a speaker and a microphone to a signal that was already compressed. Send the original file instead — WhatsApp will forward the actual audio, and both phones can email a file to yourself.

If your recording is a video — a Zoom call, a lecture you filmed, a service somebody streamed — you do not need to convert it first. Upload the video.

2. Listen to thirty seconds of it

Genuinely. Before you do anything else.

You are checking for three things: can you make out the words, is there a constant background noise, and does the volume swing wildly between speakers. If the answer is bad on any of those, no transcription tool is going to rescue it, and you will save yourself an hour by finding out now.

3. Upload it

Sign in, upload, and leave it. The transcript arrives in your library and you get an email when it is ready, so you do not have to sit on the page.

Long recordings take longer than short ones. That is the only reliable statement anybody can make about it, and you should be suspicious of a service that promises you a specific number.

4. Set the language honestly

This is where most disappointing transcripts come from.

If the recording is a Yoruba conversation with English scattered through it, that is what to tell it. If it is English with Pidgin asides, say that. People often set "English" for a recording that is genuinely bilingual because English feels like the safer default, and then wonder why half of it came out wrong.

5. Read it with the audio open

The first pass is not the finished product, and treating it as one is the mistake that makes people distrust transcription generally.

Open the transcript beside the recording and skim. You are looking for the specific things machines get wrong: names, places, organisations, numbers, and the exact moment somebody switched languages. Nigerian proper nouns are especially prone to this — a system that has never met "Ikorodu" or "Chukwuemeka" will produce something phonetically nearby and grammatically confident.

Fix those. The rest is usually fine.

6. Then do something with it

A transcript is an intermediate object. Almost nobody wants one for its own sake — they want quotes, notes, a summary, a searchable record, or subtitles.
